What's A Mormon??

What's a Mormon?

Mormons are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was organized in 1830. The name ‘Mormon’ is a nickname because of the Church’s belief in the Book of Mormon 1

So who is Mormon and what is the Book of Mormon?

Mormon was an actual historical figure in the Book of Mormon. He was a prophet, military general, and record keeper who lived about A.D. 311-385 on the American Continent. After recording the history of his own lifetime, he compiled and abridged the records, engraved on plates of gold, of previous prophets. These plates were part of the record from which the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon in the early 19th century. 2

Some may ask if Mormons believe in Christ. The answer is a resounding yes! Gordon Hinckley, past president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said this, " We, of course, accept Jesus Christ as our Leader, our King, our Savior...the dominant figure in the history of the world, the only perfect Man who ever walked the earth, the living Son of the living God. He is our Savior and our Redeemer through whose atoning sacrifice has come the opportunity of eternal life. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pray and worship in the name of Jesus Christ. He is the center of our faith and the head of our Church. The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ and witnesses of His divinity, His life, and His Atonement.”3

Hopefully, after reading this you will have a better understanding of what a Mormon is. Please visit the following links for more:

6. Go to the temple often

For those who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, going to the temple is great blessing. Just as the temples and tabernacles of the Old and New Testament were sacred and holy edifices to those who entered, so it is today for members of the Church who qualify for a temple recommend. The more often we can attend the temple, the more we feel wonderful spirit that is there.

Faith in Jesus Christ

The Fourth Article of Faith states, "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."1 I don't think that it is any coincidence that faith is first on the list.
I like to associate the word trust with the faith. We must have trust in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. We must have trust in Christ's Atonement. We must have trust that we will be blessed for being obedient to the commandments.
What can we do with our faith? What is it good for? Believe it or not, it's good for growing trees. Actually it's good for growing a very special kind of tree. Alma talks about this gardening experiment in chapter 32 of the Book of Alma. To find out more just click on the picture to the right.
When we have faith it leads us to repent, or to change for the better. Which leads us to the second principle in the Fourth Article of Faith, Repentance.

Kingdoms of Glory

We read in the Bible that "There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory."1 Christ taught, "In my Father’s house are many mansions..."2 But what exactly does that mean. We learn, from modern revelation, that there are three kingdoms of glory. The Celestial is where the righteous will dwell with Heavenly Father. The Terrestrial is where good people who did not fully accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ will live. The Telestial consists of "[Those] ... who received not the gospel of Christ, neither the testimony of Jesus."3
Just like competing in any sporting event, we will be rewarded according to our performance. And don't forget that you can't break the rules. Everything must be done in God's way, through His priesthood power. There are no shortcuts to the Celestial kingdom. Paul explains in 1 Cor. 15, the kingdoms will differ in glory. The most glorious is the Celestial which is compared to the light of the sun, the Terrestrial to the moon, and Telestial to the stars.
The Celestial Kingdom is where we all want to be. It is where we will be happiest. It is where we will be with our Father. May we all strive to live worthy to enter into the presence of God.

Sandbaggin'

A couple three weeks ago we had the opportunity to help out the community of Helena. We had a lot of rain and the creeks were overflowing. Thankfully, the water has receded. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to fill sandbags I would recommend that you give it a try sometime. It is a great workout. I do not know if there is any back workout to match filling and hauling sandbags.
Service is an important part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was great to see the community come together and help those in need. A man named Benjamin in the Book of Mormon talks about service in this way, "And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."1
We can all do better at helping our neighbors and friends. "...our small and simple acts of kindness and service will accumulate into a life filled with love for Heavenly Father, devotion to the work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and a sense of peace and joy each time we reach out to one another."2

B.E.E.F.

No, I'm not talking about cattle. B.E.E.F. is an acronym my basketball coaches used to help us remember how to shoot a basketball. B stands for balance, E for eyes on the rim, E for elbow in, and F for follow through. I spent hours working on my shooting form. I wanted to be a decent ball player and shooting well is a big part of that.
Comparing this to the gospel, our goal in life should be to become a decent person and maybe even more than just decent. To realize our potential, Heavenly Father has given us a formula just like the one my coaches gave to me. We call this formula the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It helps us to keep our lives balanced, focused on worthy goals, keep covenants with our Father in Heaven, and follow through unto the very end. So just remember: B.E.E.F.

The Spirit World

Let's compare life to running a race. If we do our best and obey the rules we can win. In the race of life it doesn't matter so much what place you come in just as long as you are working your very hardest. Heavenly Father has given us commandments, or "rules", as to how we can succeed. We are given this time on earth to learn to follow those commandments and have faith in Jesus Christ. When we reach the finish line, or once we die, we will not, however receive the same prize.

When I finish a race (I never come in first by the way) I usually walk over to the shade of a tree and find something to drink. Personally, I love a nice, cold chocolate milk after a hard race. This is not, however, my final prize or trophy. I would compare this state of waiting to what we call Spirt Paradise. I am waiting for the final judgement of my performance which comes later. Those people in the race that break the rules or don't give it their all won't be so privilged as to drink a nice cold beverage or relax in the shade. We call this Spirit Prison.
I know this isn't a perfect parallel but hey, I do my best. Alma explains it much better than me. He says, "...that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles...And... that the spirits of the wicked,... shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity..."1
It's easy to see where we want to end up. May we all run the race as best we can!

Resurrection, Judgement, and Imomortality

Yes, that's me.
As a young boy I tried out for a competitive soccer team. Tryouts went well... Or so I thought... When the list was posted I looked up and down for my name but it was nowhere to be found. My heart dropped. I thought I was good enough to play. I guess this coach didn't think so. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Some time later I tried out for a different soccer team. This time, as I looked at the list, I read my very own name. I made it.
Our life here on earth can be likened to a tryout or a test wherein we must prove to God that we are willing to follow His commandments. Unlike my experience in trying out for soccer teams our Savior, Jesus Christ, is a perfect judge. We won't feel like we were cheated or rewarded less than we deserve. Jacob, a Book of Mormon prophet, says,"Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness."

The Atonement

The Atonement of Jesus Christ is what makes the whole Plan of Salvation possible. It overpowers both physical and spiritual death. Through Jesus Christ's suffering we can overcome our sins and shortcomings. "Without the grace and mercy made possible by His Atonement, we could not be saved from sin." (mormon.org) Maybe I can illustrate this principle by sharing a story.

Parable of the bicycle: Stephen E. Robinson, has written a wonderful parable, “You Are Priceless - The Parable of the Bicycle”, which I want to share with you.

“Daddy, I need to talk to you,” the little girl said. Seeing her earnest expression, the father set his newspaper aside and looked into his daughter’s eyes.

“All my friends have bikes,” the little girl explained. “Can I get a bike? I could ride it to school and lock it with a lock. I could go to my friend’s house all by myself and you wouldn’t even have to drive me.” Her eyes sparkled with excitement at the thought.

“Well,” he said, “that is an interesting idea. But having a bike is a big responsibility, you know. And bikes cost quite a lot of money.”

The little girl smiled confidently. “I’m going to pay for it myself,” she declared. ”I’m going to save up all my money and not spend even one penny. If I save and save, don’t you think I’ll have enough for a bike someday.”

Her father sat for a few moments without answering. He knew that his little girl had no idea what a bicycle would really cost. There was no way her small allowance would be enough, even if she did extra jobs around the house to add to it.

But she was so excited, so earnest – so priceless – that his heart melted. He took her into his arms and hugged her tightly. “A goal is a good thing to have,” he said. “Why don’t you try it, and let’s see what happens.”

A few days went by, and the father found his little girl sweeping the porch. The following week he noticed her working alongside her mother in the garden, pulling weeds and planting flowers. And once or twice, as the little girl went into her bedroom, he heard the clink of coins being dropped into a glass jar.

After a while, the little girl came to her father and said, “Daddy, I’ve been working and saving up all my money for a long time. Can we get my bike now?” She shook the coins in the bottom of the jar.

The father looked at the little collection of coins, and then he looked into the pleading eyes of the little girl he loved so much. “Let’s go and see what we can find out,” he suggested.

The bicycle shop had a little bell that made a tinkling noise when they walked into the store. They hadn’t looked around very long when suddenly the little girl froze. There it was! The most beautiful bicycle she could ever have imagined! She ran to it, stroking its shiny chrome and running her fingers through the colorful streamers that flowed from its handle grips. Never could there be a more perfect bike than this one. She clapped her hands with the pure delight of it.

Then she reached for the price tag.

The next moment, the sunshine in the little girl’s eyes melted into tears. “Oh, Daddy,” she wept, “I’ll never have enough. Never.” She threw herself into his arms.

Her father cradled her head on his shoulder and gently stroked her hair, letting her cry.

When the little girl finally settled down, her father wiped her tears away and said, “How about this? How much money do you have?”

“Sixty-one cents,” she answered in a forlorn voice.

“Then I’ll tell you what,” he said. “Let’s try a different arrangement. You give me everything you’ve got – the whole sixty-one cents – and a hug and a kiss, and this bike is yours. I’ll make up the difference.”

Hope came back into the little girl’s eyes. “Really, Daddy?” she asked.

“Really, honey.”

“Oh, Daddy!” she said once again, but the words were happy ones now, and the little girl hurried to fill her part of the bargain with several hugs and kisses just to be sure.

The deal was completed, and the Most Perfect Bike Ever was purchased, and the father walked beside his little girl as she wheeled it proudly to the car. In his pockets jingled the sixty-one cents, and in his heart glowed his love for his daughter and the joy he felt in knowing how hard she had worked to reach her goal. When it came down to it, the sixty-one cents – and the hugs and kisses – were exactly enough.

But the story doesn’t end there. . . .

The truth is, there’s something we all want, and we want it more than any child ever wanted any bicycle. We want the kingdom of God. We want to go home to our Father in Heaven worthy and clean.

At some point in that spiritual voyage, we recognize the full price of admission into that kingdom, and we also realize we cannot pay it. We’ll never have enough - - never. The tremendous price of perfect performance is hopelessly beyond our means.

And so we despair.

Only then can we fully appreciate the One who comes to save. For Him, each soul is priceless. When we finally feel the pain of our own shortcomings, the Savior, Jesus Christ, steps in and lovingly says, “Let’s try a different arrangement. How much do you have? You give me exactly that much (the whole sixty-one cents) and do all you can do, and I will provide the rest for now. You give me all you’ve got, and a hug and a kiss (signifying the love that cements this covenant), and the kingdom is yours. Perfection will still be our ultimate goal, but until you can achieve it on your own, I’ll let you use mine. What do you say?”

To all who want to serve God and keep his commandments, who hunger and thirst after righteousness, we declare, this is the “good news” of the gospel. Christ is the answer. He is the bridge from here to there. He is our hope when we feel cut off and alone. He is our Savior” (Stephen E. Robinson, “You Are Priceless - The Parable of the Bicycle”, Shadow Mountain 2004).

The Atonement is a beautiful thing. I hope we all remember and appreciate what our Savior has done for us.

Agency and the Fall of Adam and Eve

"Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." Lehi taught, "And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden... and they must have remained forever, and had no end. And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin." (2 Nephi 2)
When I was a little boy I chose to take a stick and knock off the tops of my next-door neighbor's flowers. Bad choice. I had to suffer the consequence. I was required to pay her for the damaged plants with my very own money. I learned at a young age that I was accountable for my actions.
We all have choices. We do not, however, get to choose the consequence for those choices. With a certain choice comes a certain consequence. If we want to be happy we need to choose to follow Jesus Christ. It's as simple as that.

Pre-earth Life: God's Purpose and Plan for Us

Have you ever wondered where you came from? Where you were before you born here on this earth?? The great thing about the Plan of Salvation is that it answers this question and others similar to it. We learn answers to questions such as, "Why are we here?" and, "Where are we going?"
But let's focus on where we came from. We lived with our Father in Heaven in the pre-earth life. He created a plan of happiness for us in which we would come to earth, gain bodies, and learn. We understood that we would make mistakes and therefore, be unable to return live with Him. Becuase we read in the scriptures that no unclean thing can dwell with God (1 Nephi 10:21). That is why a Savior would be provided. Jesus Christ, a sinless sacrifice, would provide a way for us to overcome our mistakes and weaknesses.
Now here we are. But how did we get here?? Check out The Creation to find out!

The Creation

Under Heavenly Father's direction, Jesus Christ created the earth. We can read about this process in a couple three different places. First, in Genesis chapter 1, notice the pronouns in verses 26 and 27. Secondly, in the book of Moses chapter 2. Heavenly Father wanted to give us a place to learn, grow, and be happy. I have defintely found happiness here in my life. Lastly, check out John 1. Its' a good one too.
Every year my dad takes us kids backpacking in the Uinta Mountains. We hike two miles to some lakes and pitch our tents. We spend time fishing, hiking, and just being together. I love being in the beauty that God created. I definitely feel closer to Him out there away from the world and the day to day stresses. I am thankful for the wonderful world in which we get to live our lives. I hope we all treasure the blessing it is to live in such a beautiful place.

Why We're Online

Prophecy about the Future of Missionary Work
In 1974, President Spencer W. Kimball issued an amazing prophecy about the technology driving the gospel message.
Technology will help spread the gospel. We need to enlarge our field of operation.… The Lord will lay in our hand inventions which we can scarcely conceive whereby we will be able to bring the gospel to the peoples of the world…. I have faith that the Lord will open doors when we have done everything in our power. I believe that the Lord is anxious to put into our hands inventions of which we laymen have hardly had a glimpse….We shall use the inventions the Lord has given us to awaken interest and acquaint people of the world with the truths, to ease their prejudices and give them a general knowledge. We shall need to answer specific questions, and perhaps that can be done by two-way radio and TV perfected to a point beyond our present imagination. It is conceivable that such a program greatly perfected could be multiplied ten thousand times in ten thousand tongues and dialects in ten thousand places far and near…. Tens of thousands of young missionaries endowed with the power from on high will follow up the proselyting.

Many people wonder why missionaries would be allowed to use the internet for Facebook and blogging like we are able to do.
Reason #1 If you are reading this, you have proven that online missionary work is an effective tool to contact other people.
Reason #2 Once we as missionaries meet someone where we are serving, it is easier to stay in contact with them via Facebook than using snail mail.
Reason #3 On the internet today there are many evil and perverse web pages. Through online missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the internet is once again being used for positive purposes rather than negative. Now, more people than ever can find the truth they are looking for at the click of a button.

Our Life on Earth

Our lives here on earth are full of trials and struggles (See Tests, Trials, and Turmoil). But we can have joy and happiness if we follow God's commandments. In Matthew 25 the Savior teaches us an important lesson about what we need to do. In the parable of the talents he tells us of three different servants (What's a talent?) . One is given five talents, one is given two, and one is given one. The first two men manage do double their money but the third hides his in the ground. The lord promises the first two men that they will be made rulers over many things but calls the last servant slothful and unfaithful. Why? He didn't lose any of his lord's money. It must be very important to Jesus Christ that we work hard and improve the great gifts that we have been given.
In our lives here on earth we need to do our very best. I testify that if we use our time and talents wisely our Lord will say of us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." (See Matthew 25:21)

Pray to Know the Truth through the Holy Ghost

Prayer is an essential part in coming to know our Father in Heaven. It's how we communicate with Him. Through the Holy Ghost we can receive promptings and thoughts that help us to know what our Heavenly Father wants us to do. As missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we invite people to read the Book of Mormon and to ask God if it is true. We cannot convince anyone of this by ourselves. The Spirit is what truly converts each of us.
An example of this would be... me. My parents taught me about Jesus Christ and about the Book of Mormon. As a child I may have taken their word for it. But as I grew older I realized that I needed to know for myself. I read and studied the Book of Mormon and then prayed to God asking Him if it was true. I can testify that it is. I didn't have an angel appear to me and proclaim its truthfulness, I didn't see a vision, but I did feel something deep in my heart confirming to me that what I had been taught was true. Everybody can receive an answer for themselves. You just have to ask.

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

The Book of Mormon is another book of scripture comparable to the Bible. It contains the gospel of Jesus Christ given to the people of the ancient Americas. Just as the Bible, the Book of Mormon was written by prophets of God who were striving to teach their people the word of God.
Through Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon was translated into the English language by the power of God and published in 1830. It is proof of our Father in Heaven's love for us and that He has restored the true church of Jesus Christ on the earth again. Moroni, an ancient American prophet, gives us the promise that if we read and pray with faith and real intent that God will reveal to us its truthfullness (see Moroni 10:3-5). I can testify that I have done this and I know the Book of Mormon is true.
To find out more about this book of scripture please check out some of the following links:

The Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through Joseph Smith

Joseph Smith was just a young man when he learned the true nature of God. He lived in an area where there was quite a bit of excitement concerning religion. He wondered which church was true, which one would lead him to salvation. Many of the religions interpreted the same scripture differently, confusing young Joseph. As he attended different meetings and studied the scriptures he came across a passage that really grabbed his attention. It was James 1:5 which says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Joseph decided that was exactly what he needed to do.
He picked out a place near his home and prayed to Heavenly Father. Joseph says, "I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me...When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!" Joseph Smith was instructed that none of the churches were true and that he would be called as a prophet to restore Christ's church, once again, to the earth. He would be given priesthood authority to lead and guide God's children.

Why Joseph Smith?

The Great Apostasy

The Great Apostasy was the period of time referred to in history as the Dark Ages. Doesn't sound very good does it? Well, it wasn't. During this time period the Priesthood, God's power given to man, was not on the earth. There was no prophet, no authorized man to lead the church. Needless to say, Christ's church fell apart. With nobody receiving revelation from God on how to perfrom ordinances like baptism and the sacrament, man's ideas were soon mixed with the doctrine of Christ. No good. Their were righteous men during this time who recognized the wrongs created by man. Men like Martin Luther, William Tyndale, and John Wycliffe tried making reformations to fix what was broken. They did not, however, claim that God had called them as a prophet. Thankfully, God saw fit to restore His Church, and call a prophet. His name was Joseph Smith Jr.
